In 2020, AlphaFold made a breakthrough by predicting protein structures with high accuracy, addressing a challenge structural biologists faced for decades. By 2024, its creators received a Nobel Prize. However, despite this advancement, no AI-discovered drugs had gained FDA approval by 2026. AlphaFold’s contributions primarily accelerated early drug discovery but did not resolve the years-long challenges of safety testing and regulatory reviews. The focus now should be on integrating computational predictions with experimental validation in drug development.
